Mueller Flow Control

Open Channel Flow by Subhash C. Jain,

Open Channel Flow by Subhash C. Jain,
A clear, up-to-date presentation of the principles of flow in open channels A fundamental knowledge of flow in open channels is essential for the planning and design of systems to manage water resources. Open-Channel Flow conveys this knowledge through the use of practical problems that can be solved either analytically or by simple numerical methods that do not require the use of computer software. This completely up-to-date text includes several features not found in any other book on the subject. It derives one- dimensional equations of motion using both a simplified approach and a rigorous approach, and it explains the distinction between the momentum and mechanical energy equations. The author places great emphasis on identifying the types and locations of the control sections that are essential in analyzing flow profiles, and he includes a section on recently recognized nonunique flow profiles. Offering numerous worked examples that are helpful in understanding the basic principles and their practical applications, this book: Presents the latest computational methods for profiling spatially varied and unsteady flowIncludes end-of-section exercises that measure and build understandingFully explains governing equations in algebraic and differential formBrings sluice-gate analysis completely up to dateCovers artificial channel controls such as weirs, spillways, and gates, and special topics such as transitions in supercritical flow and flow through culverts Written in metric units throughout, this excellent learning tool for senior- and graduate-level students in civil and environmental engineering programs is also a useful reference for practicing civil and environmentalengineers.

Ruling the Root: Internet Governance and the Taming of Cyberspace by Milton L. Mueller,
Ruling the Root: Internet Governance and the Taming of Cyberspace by Milton L. Mueller,
In "Ruling the Root, Milton Mueller uses the theoretical framework of institutional economics to analyze the global policy and governance problems created by the assignment of Internet domain names and addresses. "The root" is the top of the domain name hierarchy and the Internet address space. It is the only point of centralized control in what is otherwise a distributed and voluntaristic network of networks. Both domain names and IP numbers are valuable resources, and their assignment on a coordinated basis is essential to the technical operation of the Internet. Mueller explains how control of the root is being leveraged to control the Internet itself in such key areas as trademark and copyright protection, surveillance of users, content regulation, and regulation of the domain name supply industry.Control of the root originally resided in an informally organized technical elite comprised mostly of American computer scientists. As the Internet became commercialized and domain name registration became a profitable business, a six-year struggle over property rights and the control of the root broke out among Internet technologists, business and intellectual property interests, international organizations, national governments, and advocates of individual rights. By the late 1990s, it was apparent that only a new international institution could resolve conflicts among the factions in the domain name wars. Mueller recounts the fascinating process that led to the formation of a new international regime around ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. In the process, he shows how the vaunted freedom and openness of the Internet is being diminished by theinstitutionalization of the root.

Flow control - The flow control mechanism is used for controlling the flow of data in a network under well-defined conditions, while congestion control is used for controlling the flow of data when congestion has actually occurred . Flow control mechanisms are classified by whether or not they have feedback.

Flow control valve - A flow control valve regulates the flow or pressure of a fluid. Control valves normally respond to signals generated by independent devices such as flow meters or temperature gauges.

Flow control structure - A flow control structure is some type of construction that alters the flow of water in some way. As a group these are passive structures since they operate without intervention under different amounts of water flow and their impact changes based on the quanity of water available.

Transmit flow control - In data communications systems, transmit flow control is control of the rate at which data are transmitted from a terminal so that the data can be received by another terminal.
